Cevdet SUNAY Biography

Cevdet Sunay was born in Erzurum in 1899. He received education in Erzurum, Kirkuk, Edirne and Kuleli Military High School.

During World War I he participated in the training camp as a candidate officer in 1917. In the same year he was assigned to the Palestinian front. He was taken as a prisoner of war in Egypt by the British forces. After he was released from captivity he served in the War of Independence first on the Southern and then on the Western fronts.

Cevdet Sunay graduated from the military college and the military academy in 1927 and 1930 respectively. Sunay, who served with the rank of general starting from 1949, was assigned as the Chief of Staff in 1960.

Following his retirement in 1966, Sunay was appointed as a member to the Senate of the Republic. When the incumbent President Cemal Gürsel had to leave the Office due to his sickness, Cevdet Sunay was elected as the fifth President of Turkey by the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) in 1966. He left the Office in 1973 upon completion of his seven year term. In accordance with the Constitution, he served as a member in the Senate until the military intervention in 1980.

Sunay who got married to Atıfe Hanım in 1929 and had three children with her died on 22 May 1982.
