Kızılelma Cave; The conflict between investment and conservation sides is not only specific to Turkey, but also a common aspect for all countries. However, with increasing environmental concern in especially wealthy northern countries, decision makers started to realize their investments with more environmental friendly approaches in order to conserve their natural heritage. To adopt this approach in the frame of the multilateral environmental agreements as a contracting party is a natural behaviour for Turkey too. However it’s still being observed that most of the local administrations in Turkey neglects this fact. The Kızılelma-Cumayanı cave system in Zonguldak and the perception of this natural heritage by local authorities is one of the examples of this problem. The second longest cave system of Turkey is being used as a receiver mediumby the local administrators. An urgent policy shift and a detailed planning study is nesessary in order to prevent this environmental damage.
