Sofular Cave

Sofular Cave; The cave of Sofular is situated on the slopes of the Sofular deresi vally, east of the village of Sofular. The entrance is approximately 40 m below the road to Cayirkoey and is difficult to find. A survey was done during our 1988 expeditioand resulted in a mapped length of 325 m and a depth of -84 m. The character of the cave is predominantly vertical, folowing the dip of 45 degrees. The passages are mainly large and well decorated until a depth of -64 m. From here the continuation leads to a chasm of big dimensions, ending at its deepest point in a muddy sump. This sump is situated in the area of the oscillating water level, as the mud deposits indicate.
In a small chamber after the crwal, the ZOMAK group has found another chasm, who also leads to the water level in a similar depth. This indicates, that the cave is blocked at its lowest level with large mud deposits, and it is not possible to reach the level of the sources at the bottom of the valley.
In the area above the Sofuar cave we found an active sinkhole, which seems to go, but due to a lack of time we havent explored it.
