Selimiye Mosque in Edirne
Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011, Selimiye Mosque is located in Edirne province which was the capital city of the Ottoman Empire prior to Istanbul. Built in the 16th century on behalf of Sultan Selim II, the mosque is a masterwork harmonizing technical excellence with aesthetic details and is considered among the major accomplishments of the famous architect Mimar Sinan.
Comprised of a large dome surrounded with four slender minarets, the Selimiye Mosque is a unique historic heritage with a spectacular interior architecture decorated with stone, marble, wood, nacre and ceramic motifs.
